MilSpouse Friday Fill-in

1. When you vacation what type of vacation do you like to take (beach, historic, adventurous, food oriented, etc.)?submitted by Megan Dub-Yuh

Last trip I took a trip, we went to a beach, but it was too cold to swim, & I got to eat some food I normally don't eat like different types of Chinese & Seafood, plus Jack in the Box (never had it until that trip, since then 2 of their restaurants have been built in my area). I like going shopping on trips (gift shops, regular stores that carry different items for different locations [like Wal-Mart, and many others]), & enjoying the sights.

2. What is your best memory associated with a song (you know we all have tons!) submitted by Ramblings of a Marine Wife
Many of the songs that I have great memories associated with are songs that I saw performed live by their bands (a few covers fall in this category as well).

3. If you had six months with no obligations or financial constraints, what would you do with your time? submitted by Married to the Army
Travel, go to concerts, movie theaters, sporting events, and anything else that comes to mind (be spontaneous).

4. What is one thing about you that people do NOT typically notice at first that you wish they would?
submitted by Our Motto is Patience
That I'm older than I look, I hate being treated like a teenager (I'm 28).

5. .... submitted by The Three Turners: It's a summer of sequels, and if you had to live in one of each of the following "worlds" (there are three total) which would you choose and why?
--X-Men: Be a Mutant, what would your power be? This one's the only one I know anything about, my superpower, that I don't know what it would be.
--Harry Potter: Be a Witch or Muggle? idk what the differences in these are
--Twilight: Be a Vampire or Werewolf? I'm not into this one, either. I believe vampires stay up all night, so I guess this one

It's AT time for Vx, of course I'll be working the whole time, so I see McDonald's, Hot Dogs (a cart around town opened up a restaurant I haven't tried out yet since Vx is vegetarian, its open late on Friday's & Saturday's), Metallica music out loud, & other stuff he hates in my immediate future when I'm not working or sleeping. Try to have a fun weekend as well!

To return or not, that is the question

If your a long time reader, or spent what had to be endless hours reading older posts, you may have seen some entries or bits about a summer department. At my former job (security for a place that does numerous events year round), I would transfer to a different department for the 2 months they hold horse races, when a baseball team moved, my awesome post was eliminated. I was very upset about this, but not completely surprised. I was disgruntle, felt like I was being punished at my normal job for not transferring, and I haven't heard from that boss until she tried to call me into work right after my husband had surgery (he wasn't very mobile for a while). She quit calling me, but I didn't think much of it until the big events came & gone w/o getting called into work (about 3 months later, it was slow before big events). That was confirmation to me that I no longer had a job there.

After that, I started "working" for a hockey team on the blimp crew w/my husband (not getting paid). I caught the GM's & the play-by-play broadcaster's attention. January 1st, after the broadcaster found out about my broadcasting education & mentioning how nice it would be to have someone to help out during games, I started doing that. I have finally gained some experience in my field! I filled in unexpectedly on play-by-play one night when "my boss" was the arena announcer (normal guy was gone), ran the sound at the post-game show, and gradually added tasks to my job.

Friday, I received a message on Facebook from the summer dept. boss, he offered me a job! I have never been offered a job before from the boss! It's not exactly what I have done in the past, but the rules should be close enough to the same & I miss it out there. It's not a job in what I went to school for many years ago, the hours are in the evenings & weekends (formerly I worked mostly graveyards all the time) which doesn't really bother me. It's only for 2 months (hence the summer dept. nickname), but if I try to get a broadcasting job again, it will more likely than not be the same hours since I'm just starting out. I don't want to leave summer dept. boss in a bind (never did before, probably why he wants me back) if a job comes around & I have to quit. I have tried getting a job in my field before w/no luck, so I'm not very optimistic.

Should I take the summer job, or start searching for one in my field while my experience is still fresh?

P.S. Facebook can be amazing!

Monday

My blogging skills suck, the last real post (not including MFF) was in February, So here I am, with updates!

Early March, I did some color commentary during a hockey game, I froze up on the air, things I wanted to talk about didn't seem appropriate at the time, it didn't go well. Luckily, I was able to crack a few jokes, & a suspended player was also up there, so he filled in the rest of the time. A few weeks later, "my boss" filled in for the arena announcer, the person who was supposed to cover play-by-play for him didn't show up. Game time came, he still wasn't there, so I put the headset on & did my best. Apparently, people liked it! I know the GM & "my boss" were grateful I stepped up instead of broadcasting dead air, but one man left a comment on the team's facebook page stating he liked the young lady who called the game, also over the weekend the woman in charge of the facebook pages said she received several messages from people who liked me as well!

My play-by-play was NOT exactly how its supposed to be done, I had the microphone volume too high so I didn't feel like I was screaming over the largest crowd of the season (fewer listeners); the man on facebook liked hearing the background noises. I didn't talk as much as I should have, I couldn't catch all the players who played the puck during the game, my hockey knowledge is minimal; he liked my "less is more" approach. I cracked jokes, made observations ("I wish someone would tell [visiting team city] that this is a hockey game, not a figure skating competition!" for example), once I got past the "OMG I'm doing play-by-play for a professional hockey game!" shock, it was fun!

The next day, the arena announcer was back, so "my boss" was back upstairs & another man who used to be a sports anchor was up there as well. He's been wanting to start doing play-by-play, so "my boss" had invited him to come up & hang out. Him & "my boss" did that game, he was great! Definitely better than me!

Great enough, that when the arena announcer was unable to attend this last playoff game we had, "my boss" was the arena announcer again, the former sports anchor did play-by-play by himself, while I did my job tasks, along with some of the other stuff "my boss" normally does (I did both tasks when I filled in, so less pressure on them). It was also a big game, not only was it a playoff game, it was the first playoff game series the team won since 1994, & the team went from being 0-2 to 3-2 in this series. The newspaper sent a different reporter, so I had to give him some extra attention since he's not familiar w/the building or how things normally go up there. I gave the reporter, both play-by-play broadcasters, & the tv sports dept. (on the phone) the next set of playoff dates.

The last 2 or 3 games, I have also ran the sound for the post-game show, that's the part I love the most! I get to play with pots & stare at a computer screen. I also help set up and tear down the sound for the post game, then tear down & pack up the upstairs play-by-play stuff & the officials stuff that doesn't belong to the building. Vx helps out with that some, since items are store in the locker room so I'm not having to enter while men are changing clothes.

Despite the lack of pay, I'm love doing all of this, & I'm gaining experience that should really help me out! I've also done a lot of stuff on facebook for them, like promote games & broadcasts, especially for the away games. Mine & others tweets will show up on their fan page if you @ them, so I live tweet the games as much as I can. I do this on another twitter account I have set up as my full name, those tweets automatically posts on my facebook. I don't want to steal anyone's job, but maybe all of this will lead to me either getting a job w/them, or maybe another team or organization will see what I can do. I never had a job I interviewed for, word of mouth f/my mom or someone else got me in the door & I proved myself, so maybe doing all of this will help me out as well.

Who would've thought...

Wifey's taking a break this week, & I haven't blogged in too long, so I thought I would write a quick post:

Who would've thought...

...an ice rink would be warmer than a dirt floor arena???

...the only employee that was not allowed to step outside to warm up would be the non-smoker!

...my former supervisor would be the one more likely to die than her very-ill husband.

...14 inches of snow would make my happy to be unemployed!

...I would love hockey!

...my cat would bark like a dog!

...we'd get 14 inches of snow at one time! (normally we might get a few inches that melt away immediately, most of those 14 inches are still here about 2 weeks later!)

...I would consider applying for a job w/the baseball team who moved & caused me to lose my awesome summer job somewhere else.

...my husband would still not deploy after 3 years while other are on their 2nd/3rd tour.

Yeah, some random thoughts. I blame cabin fever! Hockey game tonight & tomorrow night, so maybe my sanity will return soon. Have a great weekend!

MilSpouse Friday Fill-in

Yay! It's Friday, hockey game tonight, online tomorrow, shopping should be done (hopefully!) and...

This week's questions are:

1. If you were a famous movie star, what types of movies would you star in?
Comedy definitely!

2. What is a vacation you would like to take if money were no object?
Hawaii, NYC, Italy, England, maybe Japan, I haven't really thought about this much, but off the top of my head, those seem like neat places to visit.

3. Did you have pets growing up?
Before I was 10 (we moved), I remember we had a black dog, a black cat for a while, then a gray kitty w/black stripes we found at the park. The cats ran away before we moved, the dog escaped afterwards. They were outdoor pets, dog was chained up in the backyard, cats mainly stayed by the back/main porch. We had a cat for a short time after we moved, then we found out who it belonged to. We also found out that many cats in that area have died of cat leukemia, so we never had pets again. Two years ago, a white cat I saw attempting to catch a peacock "was waiting at the door and told (my husband) that she lives here now" so she does.

4. What do you do for exercise?
Not much, I'm lazy. When I go shopping for groceries or whatever, I tend to walk the whole length of the store, sometimes twice instead of just walking to where I need to go & leave. When I'm doing the media runner thing, we park on the north end, media area is half way on the east? end, I walk all the way around the building at least twice a night after the 1st & 2nd periods, every goal sends me from one end of the section to the other & back,.

5. What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received as a MilSpouse?
None that I recall, but I can give out some to others that I learned on my own the hard way. Orders mean NOTHING!!! Orders can & will get changed or cancelled at the last minute. Not everyone in the military deploys, the ones that do seem to go on multiple deployments. Military ID's are NOT easy to get, so don't tell me it's not a "real" ID. Those "cushy" benefits that full-time military families seem to have is not what all military families have (this coming from a spouse w/no job, no schooling assistance, no insurance, & we have to live w/my mom since he can't seem to get a "real" job, or a housing allowance). Not all of us live at or very near to a "real base" (I don't count the NG "base" on the north side, the BX is only useful to buy alcohol, & that's not worth the drive there).

Does that cover everything???

Hope your weekend rocks as well!

Craziness

If your reading this, then I assume you survived all the holidays that have occurred so far. Congrats! I barely survived Christmas it felt like, the only gift I received sucked, visiting Vx's family sucked, decorations on the blimp didn't cooperate, and neither did the tail rudder.

But, the dream I've been trying to give up on, it seems to be coming true now. I finished school 6 years ago, and now I'm getting to start doing that kind of work? Seriously?! WTF!

It's not exactly what I wanted to do, but its the closest I've gotten to it. It's frustrating, but also a big sigh of relief.

I can't bitch about my husband's hobby anymore, either. If it wasn't for it, this opportunity would have never came.

They say good things come to those who wait, well that is very true!

Happy New Year!

Random Tuesday Thoughts

randomtuesday

Another Tuesday, another RTT! *happy dance* It's kinda sad that the highlight of my AM hours is participating in a meme. Oh well, it could be much worse!

My weekend revolved around hockey. A statement that would've never entered my mind until a month or two ago.

I'm sure Sunday didn't help out much, I hung out in the media area. Talk about a view! They sit in a section on the upper level, which is closed to the general public during games, it's located near the center, and you can see everything (except the face smashing the glass, blood, & fights that I normally see where the blimp crew sits). We normally sit behind one of the goals, so we can only see what happens on the other end on the jumbo screen. Hearing the play-by-play and seeing the action at the same time also helped me to understand what's going on a lot better.

The team was away Friday & Saturday nights, so I listened to the games online. On their way home Saturday night, they had a bus fire AGAIN! This is the second bus fire they've had this season, they learned a lot from the last "fire drill" that everything was saved this time. In the last one, the broadcasting equipment and some personal items were lost. On a coach's show they do on Monday nights, the broadcaster joked about running halfway home w/all his gear in hand so it was safe this time. None of the players lost their teeth this time either, so that one player will still have his two (fake) front teeth for Christmas!

Also, a homemade sign at the game Sunday:
(Team's full name) 2
Bus company 0
The (team) is on fire!

Were debating on getting an RC vehicle, put a bus body on it, either have flames pop up or smoke pellets activate on the ice, then have the blimp fly over and dump "water" (blue streamers) on the bus.

I haven't bought any Christmas gifts, a friend sent me a card, but I still haven't returned the favor. I suck, and I really don't want to go to any stores this close to Christmas.

We might go to Vx's aunt's house for Christmas, there's a game that night, so whatever we do, we'll have to be done by 6 pm or so.

Are the holiday's over yet?

Random Tuesday Thoughts

randomtuesday

So last Tuesday's hockey game wasn't as much fun as the last cheap beer night, but it was still a good game. Friday's game was the start of a 3 game stand w/this one team, last time both teams played each other, the other team slaughtered our team (idk if it had anything to do w/our team wearing special jerseys that night or not), so I'm glad they paid them back by winning the first 2 games in the series. I listened to the second game online since it was at the other team's home, so I got to hear my facebook friend again. The third will be played tonight at home. Our team has won the last 6 games in a row, & the last 8 out of 9 games (the pink jersey tops weren't lucky for them either, could this be a sign?).

My sister is driving my mom nuttier than she already is, lord help me! Luckily this sister lives far, far away and no one has heard her say anything about visiting for Christmas. Mom's bf said something about her moving back here, I believe mom's reaction was NO!!!!!!!!!!!

See why I'm her favorite?

Also, our brother is dating her first ex-husband's sister. They've been together for a while now, it still cracks me up! Our brother lives closer to our sister than mom & I do, so he can deal with her & her craziness.

Incase you were wondering about my Christmas stuff, no presents have been purchased yet, I won't be making any, the meal will probably be at the same place we had Thanksgiving at (Chinese buffet) since there's a game that night as well. I think the last time a Christmas tree was really set up was 4 years ago. That first non-tree year, between starting to walk again after breaking my femur & a severe ice storm in our area, we were lucky to have presents, & I did have to purchase most of the ones I gave out in January (no car+unable to walk=buying gifts difficult). After that, the cat w/her anry ways, was the main motivation and still is.

Have no fear, when presents start appearing, a Little Debbie Christmas Tree Cake will be placed on top. It's a tradition I started about 10 years ago, my parents had presents wrapped up and sitting by a window, but no tree up. The tree did finally go up, then when my aunt felt bad about hosting a Christmas meal w/o a tree, I brought the Little Debbie tree to her house, placed it on the edge of her computer desk, the presents people brought were sitting beside & under it, so they were placed "under a tree" that year.

The club Vx flies with is having their Christmas party as a nearby buffet later this week. I guess I'll get to meet some more wives that put up w/the same "toys" that I do. Of course, most if not all of the other members are rich, &/or live in their own houses w/garages, while we live in a 2-bedroom apartment w/my mom & her bf. The members that are kids, one of their parents is also a member.

Six Word Saturday

I suck, I haven't played along in a LONG time! If you've never played along before, its very simple, describe something in six words. My six words:

Who knew I would like hockey!

Two months ago, I never would have thought I would be attending almost every home game for this hockey team, let alone helping to promote them and Vx's club (they fly the blimp and indoor planes at the games). Watching the games have been so much fun! The one home game I couldn't attend, I listened to it online, which ended up in overtime with a 12 round shoot-out. If I'm home later tonight, I plan on listening to the away game as well.

Click on the banner at the top or on the left sidebar to visit Cate's blog, but try not to wake her (shhh)!

Have a great weekend!

Me? Hockey? PR? Wow!

I wrote a little bit about this yesterday, but I'll get more into it here. So on facebook, I've been posting things about the hockey team that Vx has been flying a blimp for. Well, guess who has noticed?

The General Manager! Wow! He's not the only staff member, one night I didn't feel like coming to the game, so I stayed home and listened to it online. I said something on facebook about it, and the broadcaster friended me! We exchanged a few messages, I told him what we've been doing at the games and he told me where he sets up (an area I have access to, but most other people don't). As a former "I want to work in radio!" geek, I haven't quit screaming inside about this "friendship" since.

Back to the GM, I've posted pictures that were taken on my phone, and tagged the team, venue, Vx & I in them (the RC club doesn't have a page), he really likes that, said something about giving him lots of free PR. I don't feel like I'm putting tons of effort into all of this, like I told him, I was just posting stuff at 3 am out of boredom.

Vx now wants me to take his nice professional-like camera to the games for some really good quality pics (instead of Blackberry pics). He also keeps telling me to go hang out w/the broadcaster, I just don't feel any time would be a good time, I assume he talks before game (I tuned in part way through the 1st period), does play-by-play during the games, and talks during most of the breaks and afterwards. Vx told me not to worry about the blimp, they can handle the parts I do. I think I would like just watching him work, but it would be nice to ask questions as well, and he may want to interview me on-air or something. I also don't want to give him the impression that I'm stalking him.

Another thing that kinda concerns me, I know very little about hockey, I attended and watched my first real game about a month ago, other than those Ducks movies and the scenes from The Simpson's, Friends, & other shows that have shown hockey, my exposure has been minimal. I know some terms, but not what they really mean (like Icing), which also concerns me.

Guess I should research hockey, and hope it makes some sense. Maybe study some PR stuff online while I'm at it, get some better promotion ideas than what I came up with on my own (stuff I've seen others do that caught my attention, some things I learned studying broadcasting as well).

This could also be a stepping stone for other things as well, idk, but word of mouth can be a good thing.

Maybe my dream will finally come true...

Word(less?) Wednesday

My week in pictures:

Saturday there was a hockey game:

The blimp flying before the game

Fans were encouraged to bring a teddy bear to toss on the rink after the home team's first goal, all the bears were collected for Toys for Tots.

The mascot's 4 wheeler wouldn't start, so instead of doing his spinning trick, he walked around on the ice during the break.

Someone on the other team got his stick stuck in the net, when players lose equipment, it has to stay put until the whistle is blown.

Monday I visited Catoosa, OK to see the Blue Whale's Christmas lights

Side view, personally I love how the lights on the top reflect off the water

View of the mouth, and the baseball cap

Noah's Ark in the parking lot

Tuesday night was another hockey game, only one picture I took turned out good enough to post here

The blimp approaching for landing

In the future, more hockey game pictures will be seen, I'll explain more in another post.
